Mozilla Thunderbird authentication failure with Gmail

Even the latest version of Thunderbird mail, present by default in Ubuntu 19.10 Eoan Ermine is distributed with bug that prevents this linux flagship mail app from connecting to Gmail account successfully.

When setting up IMAP connection with 2-Step Verification turned On it initially goes through all the authentication process and finally crashes with Authentication Failure.

Fortunately there is nice and easy solution!

Open Thunderbird Menu and go to Preferences > Advanced > Config Editor…

Thunderbird Preferences

Search for ‘general.useragent.compatMode.firefox‘ and set it’s value to be ‘true‘.

Config Editor

Now try to establish connection to your Gmail account again and it should go through with no problems.

I’m not sure if it is Ubuntu’s Thunderbird distributed application problem, Mozilla’s problem or Gmail issue. Also can’t say how many users might be affected, but I think this is quite essential and either Ubuntu, Mozilla or Google should not let it like this.

iOS 13.2.2 Update

On 7 Nov 2019 Apple released an update to it’s iOS and iPadOS version 13.2.2 bringing the build number to 17B102.

Probably the main point of this update is to fix quite widely reported memory management issues, resulting in aggressive application killing by the operating system in previous version, sometimes making multitasking features nearly impossible.

According to release notes iOS 13.2.2 includes bug fixes and improvements for your iPhone. This update:

  • Fixes an issue that could cause apps to quit unexpectedly when running in the background
  • Resolves an issue where iPhone may temporarily lose cellular service after a call
  • Addresses an issue where cellular data may temporarily not be available
  • Fixes an issue that caused replies to S/MIME encrypted email messages between Exchange accounts to be unreadable
  • Addresses an issue where using Kerberos single sign-on service in Safari may present an authentication prompt
  • Resolves an issue where charging may be interrupted on YubiKey Lightning-powered accessories
